Wellness & Quiet Retreat

A quiet island base for your own practice — not a staffed retreat

Let’s start with what this isn’t, because the word “retreat” usually implies a programme. There is no instructor here, no scheduled classes, no facilitator, no sound bath at six. What exists is the setting and the absence of interruption, and for the people who ask for this, that’s the entire point.

Who asks for it

Often someone at the end of something. A long illness, a divorce, a year of caring for a parent, a job that ended badly. Sometimes a teacher scouting a quiet place to bring four or five students later. Sometimes just a person with a daily practice who is tired of doing it in a hotel room. What they share is that they don’t want to be entertained, and they don’t want to be part of a group.

What the island can and cannot give

It can give you low-traffic sand, water without jet skis on it, and days with nothing written in them. It can give you evenings after the day boats have left, which is when these islands become almost silent. It cannot give you a studio, a massage table, a clinic, or a shop — and it cannot give you a phone signal, which most guests only realise is a feature on the second day.

The food is worth planning for. Meals are cooked by the host family and are simple: fish, rice, plantain, fruit. If you eat plant-based, say so before you book rather than on arrival — some islands can genuinely accommodate it and some cannot, and it’s the kind of thing that decides which island suits you.

Where you would actually practise

On sand at the water’s edge in the early morning, or on an open deck. Sand is not flat and gets hot by mid-morning, so bring your own mat and plan around the first and last hours of light rather than the middle of the day. Nobody will look at you strangely; there is usually nobody there at all.

Frequently asked questions

Are there classes or an instructor?

No. We arrange the island, the cabin, the transport and the meals — not a programme. If you want a taught retreat, this isn’t one, and we would rather you know that now than feel misled on arrival.

Can I get vegetarian or vegan meals?

Sometimes, and it depends on the island. A few can genuinely do plant-based meals well; others are set up around fish. Tell us in the first message, because for you it may determine where you stay. Bring backup food you like — there are no shops out here.

Where can I practise, and should I bring a mat?

Bring one. The usable surfaces are beach sand and open decking, and neither is level. Early morning and late afternoon are the comfortable hours; the middle of the day is hot and the light is hard.

Will day-trip groups disturb the quiet?

Much less than you’d fear, and it’s a matter of timing. Visiting boats arrive mid-morning and are gone by mid-afternoon, so the island’s quiet hours are the ones at each end of the day — which happen to be the hours you’d want anyway.

Can I bring a small group of my own?

Yes, and that changes what we need to know: how many people, whether they need separate cabins, and whether you want a stretch of the day held clear for a session. Say it early, since cabin availability for several people at once is the part that has to be confirmed first.
