How to Get to San Blas From Panama City

There is no highway to San Blas and no bridge to any of the islands. Getting there is a three-leg journey that starts in the dark outside your Panama City accommodation and ends on a cay a couple of hours later, and knowing the shape of it in advance removes almost every unpleasant surprise.

The route, leg by leg

1. Pickup in Panama City. Tours include door-to-door collection from your accommodation, normally between 5:00 and 5:45 AM. The vehicle collects several parties, so your slot within that window depends on where you are in the city.
2. The 4x4 to Carti. Roughly 2.5 hours on a winding mountain road that climbs into and through the Guna Yala comarca. This is the leg that catches people out: the curves are constant, and there is nowhere useful to stop once you are on them.
3. The boat crossing. From the Carti embarkation point a speedboat runs out to the islands. Life jackets are worn from the moment you board, and the crossing itself is short compared with everything that preceded it.

Total door-to-door time for a day tour is around 14 hours, which is why it is a full day and not a morning excursion.

What time you need to be ready

Be downstairs and ready from 5:00 AM. If you have booked the Dutch Cays (Cayos Holandeses) route, that moves earlier — around 4:30 AM — because the boat leg is considerably longer. The convoy cannot wait for a late passenger without pushing back everyone else’s day, so a missed pickup is genuinely a missed tour.

Pickup zones

Standard pickup covers the areas most visitors stay in, including Obarrio, San Francisco, Amador, Costa del Este, Casco Viejo, Albrook, El Cangrejo and Punta Paitilla. Playa Bonita pickups — the Westin and Dreams Playa Bonita among them — carry a small additional per-person charge, since they sit well outside the normal collection loop.

If you need to change your pickup address, it has to be done at least 24 hours ahead. A change requested the same morning cannot be made: by then the driver’s route is fixed.

Three things that cannot be fixed once you have left

• Your original passport or ID. It is required at the checkpoint into Guna territory and a photocopy or a phone photo is not accepted.
• Cash. There are no ATMs anywhere in Guna Yala. You need cash for the community entry tax and for anything you buy on the islands.
• Motion sickness medication. Take it before departure. Once you are on the mountain road it is too late for it to work properly.

Can I drive myself?

The road is passable, but almost nobody does it. Independent travel means arranging your own permits for the comarca, finding and negotiating boat transport at Carti, and leaving a vehicle parked at the embarkation point for the day. An organised tour bundles all of it into one price and one schedule, which is why even confident drivers generally do not bother.
