Every other cabin in San Blas is on the sand. This one isn’t: it’s built out over the water, on the seaward side of the island, and the sea is under the floor all night rather than somewhere beyond the door.

Sleeping over the water

The difference is not comfort, it’s location. You fall asleep to water moving under the structure and wake up to open Caribbean rather than a beach, which is why this is the most photographed way to spend a night in the archipelago and the one people plan whole trips around. It’s a regular pick for honeymoons and anniversaries, and the reason is simple: nothing else here looks like it.

Exactly how you get into the sea from your cabin depends on the island you’re assigned — ask us before you pay if swimming straight from the deck is the picture you have in your head, and we’ll tell you what’s true for your dates.

The real constraint is availability

There are far fewer overwater cabins than any other category, and they’re the first to go. The stated minimum is 3 days’ advance booking, but that’s the floor for the operator’s logistics, not realistic advice for this cabin — for a specific date, especially between December and April, ask weeks out.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the Deluxe cabin?

The Deluxe is the more comfortable cabin on the beach; the Overwater is the more extraordinary place to put one. If you want the better bed, book Deluxe. If you want to sleep over the sea, nothing else substitutes.

Does it have power, air conditioning or a private bathroom?

Treat all three as no. Being built over water doesn’t change the fact that these are off-grid Guna islands — the structure is the luxury here, not the plumbing. Tell us what you can’t do without and we’ll be straight about whether this is the right booking.

Is it suitable for small children or non-swimmers?

Tell us who’s travelling and we’ll flag which cabins and islands make sense. A cabin over water is a different proposition with a toddler than with two adults, and it’s better sorted before you pay than on arrival.

How far in advance should we really book?

Weeks, not days, for a fixed date. This is the one category where the difference between booking early and booking on time is whether the answer is yes at all.

Is late check-out worth paying for here?

More than in any other cabin. A late check-out buys you a whole extra morning over the water on your last day, which is the part of the stay people say they’d have paid for twice.

Can we take photos there?

That’s half of why people book it. Early morning, before the boats start moving, is when the water is flattest and there’s nobody else in the frame.
