On a clear night out here you can see the band of the Milky Way with your own eyes, because there is no town, no port and no highway anywhere near enough to wash it out. That’s the whole reason this option exists, and it’s why people who choose it name it as the highlight of the trip rather than as the cheap way to stay.

The trade is real and worth naming: you’re outdoors all night, in the warm, with insects, sand and the sound of water. If that reads as an adventure you’ll love it. If it reads as a problem, a cabin costs more and solves it.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if it rains during the night?

Rain here usually arrives as a short, heavy burst and passes. Genuinely unsafe conditions are a different matter: the operator reschedules or refunds rather than running the trip, and that decision is made before you’re on a boat, not after.

What should I bring that I wouldn’t for a cabin?

Insect repellent above all, plus water sandals, light clothing for a warm night, and a power bank — outlets are not something to count on. Our packing guide has the rest, and the “what not to bring” section matters here more than anywhere.

Are there bathrooms?

Shared, basic island facilities — the same ones the cabins use. This is off-grid Guna Yala, so expect cold water and simplicity, and bring your own towel and soap because neither is provided.

Will I actually see the Milky Way?

On a clear, moonless night, yes — that’s not marketing, it’s what happens when there’s no artificial light for miles. Cloud cover is the one thing nobody controls, and the rainy months bring more of it.

Is camping safe here?

You’re on a small inhabited island with your Guna hosts and the rest of the group, and life jackets are mandatory on every boat. The honest caveats are the same as for any island stay: there are no clinics out here, so bring the medication you need and travel insured.

Who should not book this?

Light sleepers, anyone who needs air conditioning to sleep, and travellers who’d be unhappy without a door. San Blas as a whole is also not recommended for pregnant travellers, people with back or hip conditions, or anyone whose health could be affected by sun, sea and distance from medical care.
