Dutch Cays (Cayos Holandeses)

Ask a San Blas guide which reef has the best snorkeling and the answer comes back the same: Cayos Holandeses. It is the farthest point most tours reach — a turquoise lagoon held inside a ring of coral, well out beyond the busier cays near the mainland.

Why distance is the point

What protects this reef is exactly what makes it awkward to reach. Fewer boats make the longer crossing, so there is less traffic over the coral, and the difference is visible: the coral here is noticeably better preserved than on the reefs closer to Carti that receive boat after boat every operating day. You are not paying for a longer ride, you are paying for what the longer ride keeps away.

What changes when you book this tour

Because of the extra distance, the Dutch Cays tour runs on its own rules, and all three are worth knowing before you commit:

• Pickup around 4:30 AM, earlier than the 5:00–5:45 AM standard for every other day tour, because the boat crossing is longer.
• A minimum group size applies per booking — the crossing is not run for one or two people.
• No child discount. On this tour adults and children pay the same rate, unlike the other San Blas day tours.

What this stop is not

It is a reef and a lagoon, not an island with amenities. There is no infrastructure to speak of, no shade built for visitors, nothing to buy. It is also not a diving destination: standard San Blas tours do not include scuba with tanks, here or anywhere else in the archipelago. This reef is at its best a couple of meters below your mask.

Choosing between this and the VIP tour

Be honest about your priority. If reef quality is the whole reason you are going to San Blas, this is the tour, and the 4:30 AM alarm is the price. If snorkeling is one good part of a day you mostly want to spend on beaches, the VIP day tour includes solid guided snorkeling closer to shore on a normal schedule and without a minimum group.
