Dutch Cays Tour (Cayos Holandeses)
The farthest, most pristine reef in San Blas — for serious snorkelers
Ask any San Blas guide which tour has the best snorkeling and this is the answer. Cayos Holandeses is a turquoise lagoon held inside a ring of coral, the farthest point most boats reach — and the distance is exactly what has kept it in the condition it’s in.
What sets this tour apart
- Earlier pickup — around 4:30 AM instead of the 5:00–5:45 AM standard, because the crossing is longer.
- Minimum group size applies — the extra distance means the tour only runs with a minimum number of travellers on the booking.
- No child discount — unlike our other day tours, adults and children are charged the same on this one.
- Reef quality is the whole point — fewer boats make the trip out, so there’s less traffic over the coral and the difference against closer reefs is visible from the surface.
What’s included
- ✅ Door-to-door 4x4 transport and boat transfers, with a longer crossing than our standard tours
- ✅ Snorkeling at Cayos Holandeses
- ✅ Lunch with a drink
- ✅ Life jackets and an experienced local Guna guide
- ⛔ Guna Yala community entry tax (paid separately, in cash)
Who this tour is for
Be honest about your priorities. If the reef is the reason you’re coming to Panama and you’ll happily trade an hour of sleep and some flexibility for it, nothing else in the archipelago competes. If snorkeling is a nice-to-have rather than the point of the day, the VIP Day Tour gives you a guided session closer to shore on a normal schedule, and you’ll enjoy it more than a 4:30 AM alarm.

Frequently asked questions
Why is pickup so much earlier than the other tours?
The boat crossing to the Dutch Cays is considerably longer than to the closer island groups, and the sea is calmer earlier in the day. Starting at around 4:30 AM is what makes it possible to get out there, spend real time in the water, and still be back the same evening.
What is the minimum group size?
The tour only departs once a minimum number of travellers is on the booking for that date. We’ll tell you where your date stands when you message us — sometimes it’s already confirmed and you’re simply joining it.
Do children pay the same as adults?
Yes. This is the one day tour with no child discount, which is a direct consequence of the fuel and time the longer crossing costs. If you’re travelling with kids and want the child rate, our other day tours all keep it.
Will the boat ride make me seasick?
It’s longer and more open than the other routes, so if you’re prone to motion sickness, take something before departure rather than after symptoms start — that also applies to the winding mountain road to Carti.
Do I need to bring my own snorkel gear?
Bring it if you have it. Gear is sometimes available but isn’t guaranteed to be there or to fit you, and on the tour whose entire purpose is the reef, a leaking mask is a genuinely bad way to spend the morning.
Are there facilities at the cays?
Essentially none — this is a reef and a lagoon, not an island with amenities. Bring water, sun protection and a hat, and expect the sun on open water to be far more intense than it feels.
