Nobody books this as their first trip to the Caribbean. The people who ask for it have snorkelled somewhere before — Bocas, Belize, the Keys, or a standard San Blas day tour a few years back — and they came home with the same complaint: too many stops, not enough water.

Who actually asks for this

Dive-club trips, three friends who plan their holidays around reefs, couples where both of them freedive, and the occasional marine biology student. What they share is that the island list matters less to them than the hours. They already know how to clear a mask, and they don’t need the fifteen minutes of instruction a mixed group needs before anyone gets wet.

Why one day isn’t enough for this

The far reef and the wreck lie in different directions, and a single day forces you to pick one. A night on an island removes the choice. Cayos Holandeses gets a full early morning, while the water is flattest and there is almost no other boat traffic — that’s the whole reason its departure is earlier than every other tour we run. The Perro Chico shipwreck, shallow enough to hang over without a tank, then gets its own unhurried slot instead of being the last twenty minutes before the boat turns for the mainland.

We keep the group deliberately small. Fewer people over the same coral means less silt kicked up, fewer fins in your frame, and a guide who can actually point things out instead of counting heads.

What to tell us when you write

Say how comfortable each person is in open water, and who is bringing their own mask and fins. Both change what we recommend more than your dates do.

Frequently asked questions

Is there scuba diving in San Blas?

No — and we’d rather say it now than after you’ve flown. There is no tank infrastructure in the archipelago: no fills, no dive shop, no certified operation. The reefs here are genuinely shallow and are best experienced at the surface. If tanks are the point of your trip, San Blas is the wrong destination.

What level do I need to join?

Confident swimming in open water, and enough experience that a mask and snorkel are boring rather than novel. There is no certification requirement, but this expedition is paced for people who don’t need coaching.

Should I bring my own mask and fins?

If you’re particular about fit, yes. Gear is sometimes provided but a guaranteed fit isn’t, and a leaking mask ruins exactly the thing you came for. Life jackets are mandatory on every boat regardless.

Why is the pickup earlier than for other tours?

Because the crossing to the Dutch Cays is considerably longer. The early start is what buys you calm water and an empty reef; leaving at the normal hour would put you there at the busiest, choppiest part of the day.

Someone in our group is a weak swimmer — can they still come?

Yes, but tell us in advance so the day is built around it. Shallower stops and the Natural Pool sandbar, where you wade rather than swim, keep them in the water while the rest of the group is out over the reef.
