Perro Grande Island

The name means “big dog”, and within the Isla Perro group the “big” part is the useful information. Most San Blas cays are tiny — a ring of sand you can cross in a minute. Perro Grande has genuine width to its beaches, which changes what a day here feels like more than any single attraction would.

Room to spread out

On a small cay, everyone off the boat ends up on the same twenty metres of sand. Here they do not. That matters most on a busy day in the dry season, when several boats are out at once: the difference between a beach you share and a beach that feels like yours is mostly a question of metres, and Perro Grande has them.

Water for swimming, not for chasing fish

The water is calm and consistently turquoise, which makes it excellent for floating and unremarkable for snorkeling. This is a place to swim slowly and get out when you feel like it, not a place to hunt for reef life — for that, the shipwreck at Perro Chico is a short ride away and does the job far better. Staying the night

Perro Grande is one of the inhabited islands with simple beachfront cabins for travellers on a multi-day package. San Blas overnight stays are booked by cabin type rather than by island — shared dorm, private classic, private deluxe, camping under the stars, or an overwater cabin — and the exact island is confirmed closer to the date based on availability. Stays run one to three nights, and cabin availability needs at least three days’ notice.

Every cabin type includes round-trip 4x4 transport from Panama City, the boat transfers, the cabin itself, breakfast, lunch and dinner, a tour to two more islands, a stop at the Natural Pool and a Guna guide. It does not include drinks and snacks, alcohol, the comarca entry tax, snorkel gear, or personal items like towels and soap. Late check-out, until mid-afternoon rather than the morning boat, is available for a small per-person fee.

Expect to be offline

There is no wifi on any island in San Blas, and cell signal is inconsistent — some islands catch a usable signal, most do not. On a wide, quiet beach with nothing to refresh, that tends to be the part people describe afterwards as the point of the trip rather than its inconvenience.
